One Day, One Job
Posted in First Job Out of College Generation Y Internships Job Hunting Recommended Resources Reviews of "Getting from College to Career" on July 8, 2008 at 3:09 pm
A big thank you to Willy Franzen and the team at One Day, One Job for the awesome review of my book, Getting from College to Career.
What is One Day, One Job, you ask? It’s a must read for any entry-level job seeker in today’s uber-competitive, weakening economy, everything-is-slower-in-the-summer job market. Recent Cornell grad Willy Franzen started One Day, One Job (and its sister site, One Day, One Internship) to do exactly what its name suggests: feature one hiring company a day.
One Day, One Job’s mission is to revolutionize job hunting by doing much of the leg work for you, finding companies — usually ones that are off the beaten (Fortune 500) path — that are hiring entry-level candidates. Willy and his team also provide an article about each company, so you know as much as possible about what the company does and what they’re looking for. All you have to do is apply.
Beyond the great daily jobs, I love the site’s articles, where the One Day, One Job team shares its strategies for finding the jobs they list — from Google searches to magazine “best of” lists to cold calling and more. The job search process is in constant flux, and One Day, One Job is on top of all the trends.
Personal Branding Blog

A big, big thanks to Dan Schawbel of Personal Branding Blog for writing a great post today about my book, Getting from College to Career. Dan’s blog is an amazing resource for anyone interested in standing out from the crowd in your career. He writes thoughtful, action-oriented posts and also practices what he preaches — he reached out to me and has been a generous and helpful contact.
One of my favorites posts by Dan is about branding yourself when your name is difficult for people to spell. I’ve been struggling with that my whole career and I love that Dan wrote about it.

Young Money magazine names best career advice books for grads (mine included!)
Posted in Reviews of "Getting from College to Career" on October 19, 2007 at 1:19 pm
Check out this article by Susan Johnston in the current issue of Young Money magazine, “Best Career Advice Books for Grads.”
The featured books include Penelope Trunk’s Brazen Careerist, Peter Vogt’s Career Wisdom for College Students and my book, Getting From College to Career: 90 Things to Do Before You Join the Real World.
Here is an excerpt of the article:
According to “Getting from College to Career,” the interview stage is the time to “research and assess an organization’s culture” in terms of work-life fit. If you anticipate needing time off to train for a marathon or want the flexibility to work from home on occasion, you should look for clues that the company values work-life balance during your interview. Trunk writes in “Brazen Careerist” that “if you get through a full interview and the hiring manager never reveals that she has a life outside of work, there’s no need to ask: she doesn’t.”
Another important aspect to interviewing is choosing the right outfit. In “Getting from College to Career,” Pollak tells job candidates to “always err on the side of formality and wear a dark suit.” Trunk also suggests that you find out how others at the company dress, because “people like to hire people who look like them, and clothing is the easiest way to make this impression.” You can hide out in the lobby and observe employees coming and going or call human resources to find out what the dress code is.

A big thank you to my friend Diane K. Danielson, founder and CEO of the Downtown Women’s Club for including Getting from College to Career on her terrific new “Top Shelf Reading Picks” blog for Entrepreneur.com.

Employee Evolution review of "Getting from College to Career"

Huge thanks to Ryan Paugh of Employee Evolution (one of the very best blogs on Gen Y career issues) for his fantastic review of my book, Getting from College to Career.
Here is a brief excerpt of the review:
Getting from College to Career skips the corporate jargon and gets straight to the point. Sick of hearing about nothing but business scenarios? This book is the universal roadmap to being a solid individual, regardless of your ambitions…
One of the most valuable features of Getting from College to Career is the “Make this work for you” checklists. After making key recommendations, Pollak encourages her readers to apply it to their own lives, giving a step-by-step plan on how to achieve. There’s even a check-box you can pencil in after you’re finished. I’m a sucker for checking things off.
