Highlights from my weekend reading stack: 3 recommended articles for young professionals

newspaper.jpgI enjoyed a relaxing day in the country this Saturday, which allowed me to read a lot. Our Internet connection wasn’t working because of a thunderstorm, so I dug into my ever-growing stack of magazines and newspapers. Here are a few articles I came across that I recommend for career-minded Millennials…

Vacations are good for you, medically speaking – Why all employees should take their full allotment of vacation days (from The New York Times)

A primer for young people starting their first job – Advice and resources for young people making decisions about such employment benefits as health insurance and 401(k)s (from The New York Times)

See you at reunion. Or maybe not. – An interesting piece on whether social networking sites like Facebook will make college reunions obsolete. Would love to know what you think (from Newsweek)

Happy reading!

@ Lisa – Thanks for the comment. So great to hear that you went on your first informational interview…and that it went well. Congrats!

    Hi Lindsey,

These are some really interesting and helpful links. I also wanted to write to let you know that I had my first ‘informational interview’ with someone in my field this morning, and it went over well. Thanks for all the great advice.

LOL — I am debating on going to my reunion, honestly, because I keep in touch with so many friends through Facebook! All three articles were great. Good excuse to start planning my next vacation :)

@ Miriam – good for you for taking a break!

It’s interesting about Facebook and reunions. I agree that nothing beats face-to-face communication and nostalgia, but I wonder if a generation that grows up with Facebook will feel the same way. If nothing else, reunions offer a golden opportunity for hooking up with an old flame, and the web can never replace that…

It will be interesting to see what happens!

    Lindsey –
When my internet went down due to a storm this week, I took it as a sign that I needed a break! Lucky for us, you have a good reading stack :-)

Facebook will give some people their “fix” of old college friends, but I think that reunions are about more than just catching up with people for many alumni. Revisiting old stomping grounds, experiencing a sporting event or showing children around a campus will probably still be strong draws for many people. I do love that Facebook offers the opportunity to connect without much effort, though!

    Thanks for the great links!
