One of the best ways to use linkedin.com during your job search is to use it for company and people (hiring manager) research. It’s so important to know who you will be interviewing with. You can tell a lot about someone after reading their profile. Also, linkedin.com is a great way to find out about people’s careers. If you type in a company name like the “Gap” you will see all of the most recent hires, promotions, hottest profiles, and then statistics on the type of people at the gap and companies they came from and where they usually move on to after they leave the gap.
I am a career coach and I love using linkedin for networking because it’s a great way to stay in touch without having to build or nurture relationships all the time. Once you are in someone’s linked in, they are willing to help you and stay in touch even if it’s only once a year.

Thanks Lindsey! Just wanted to add another tidbit to this conversation. Using the “Group” feature that LinkedIn offers is also a quick way to build your network and begin to see the impact this site can have on your professional networking endeavors!

Thanks for passing along Teresa’s article. Her piece definitelly provides a great framework for those who are new to the game of social networking’s professional uses and advantages.
I completely agree with you about how the Internet has revoutionalized the way we communicate and interact with society, so why not network professionally online? Ultimately at the end of the day, it definitely still is about who you know. Not to mention the cost-effective advantages of utilizing online professional networking!
