Check out these smart and simple tips from blogger Emily Justice on how to build a positive presence on the web. The reality today is that most people will check you out online before you ever meet in person, so it’s really important to have a strong (and appropriate!) online persona. Some of Emily’s suggestions include reviewing books, staying away from fan sites and commenting on blogs (hint, hint!).
Do you have additional tips for building a great online presence? Please share!

you can share your career/personal success with your college/university – they will likely want to do an article on you (say, if you run a marathon for charity)…
Thanks for linking my post, Ms. Pollak.
The other comments give good advice too.
@ Stephanie – Another good tip, thanks so much! If you don’t want to start your own blog, you can post articles or stories on the group blog http://www.gather.com.
Thanks for commenting!
Lindsey, thanks for the fantastic tips about building an online presence. I would add posting regular, well-written content on a blog and submitting articles/letters to the editor to local newspapers.
Janet, thanks for the “google alert” tip. I just signed up for alerts related to my name.
@ Janet Buckley – Great suggestions! Thanks so much for commenting.
Volunteering and participating in charity walks and runs is also a good way to bolster a positive online presence.
Also, create a google alert for yourself so you know whenever a good (or bad) thing about you hits the ‘net.
